Plumbing marketing built around the emergency call

Plumbing marketing works when you show up for urgent searches in the neighborhoods you serve and the call gets answered and booked, day or night. Plumbing books more calls than other trades, 43% on average,1 but small shops booked only about 9% of calls that came in after 6 pm.1 In our study, independent plumbers held a top 3 spot at only 22% of points near their own shop.2

Why plumbing marketing is different

Plumbing demand is steadier than HVAC and more urgent. ServiceTitan's data shows plumbing booking rates barely move with the seasons, and plumbing books the highest share of calls of any major trade, 43%.1 Searches like "plumber near me" or "water heater leaking" turn into a phone call within minutes, and the homeowner calls whoever answers.

That puts two things ahead of everything else: being in Google's top 3 where the emergency happens, and answering. In ServiceTitan's data, small shops booked about 9% of calls that came in after 6 pm, against about 21% for larger shops.1 Across home services, only 52% of callers reach a person, according to Invoca's 2026 benchmarks.6

Are Google Local Services Ads worth it for plumbers?

Often, yes. Plumbing is a natural fit for pay-per-lead ads because the call is urgent and the job is usually worth more than the lead. The numbers in 2026:

$69.26 per lead ÷ 43% booked ≈ $161 per booked job

SearchLight's May 2026 data for plumbing: $69.26 per lead, 43% booked, 23.2% of leads became paying customers.5 Earlier in the year, plumbing leads averaged $57 and drain and sewer leads $59.7

The catch is the 2026 rule set. A missed call during business hours is billable if the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds, and Google credits bad leads automatically instead of letting you dispute them. Leads for jobs or areas you don't serve aren't credited anymore.8,9 For an emergency trade, that makes answer rate a direct cost. LSA is also moving into Google Ads, and historical reports don't carry over, according to PinMeTo.10

How do plumbers show up higher on Google Maps?

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.12 The distance part means a plumber can be first at the shop and invisible across town, and that's where many calls are lost.

Share of the 13 spots within about 7 miles of each company's shop where it was in Google's top 3. Isoline study, October 2026.2

The seven plumbing-only companies had a median of 759 reviews, and 7 of the 11 plumbing companies were still beaten nearby by a competitor with fewer.2 Reviews raise trust; they don't fix a category, a service area or a missing town page.

  • Pick the primary category that matches your main money search, then add the specific services.13
  • Keep the service area to where you'll actually drive at 9 pm.14
  • Set real hours, including after-hours if you take emergency calls, and make sure the phone is answered during them.

How do plumbers know which marketing pays?

Most owners can't answer the question that matters: which marketing produced the jobs on the board this week. In a 2026 survey of about 1,000 home service operators, 67% said they can't tie marketing spend directly to revenue, and 78% use two or more marketing vendors.15

The fix is plumbing, not a prettier dashboard:

  • One tracking number per source. Google requires the numbers on your Business Profile to be under your direct control and lets you add up to two numbers beyond the primary one.14,16 Website visitors get a number that matches how they arrived.
  • Match every call to a job. Each tracked call is tied to the customer and job in your field software, so the report reads "Maps: 31 calls, 17 booked, $41,300 sold", not "2,400 impressions."
  • Score the calls. We listen for whether the call was a real opportunity, whether it was booked, and why not when it wasn't.

Questions owners ask

Is Local Services Ads worth it for plumbers?

Usually, for emergency work, if the phone is answered. In May 2026 plumbing leads averaged $69.26 with 43% booked, about $161 per booked job.5 Missed calls during business hours are billable, so answer rate matters.8

Can I dispute bad LSA leads?

Not manually anymore. Google reviews lead quality over 30 days and credits invalid leads automatically. Leads for job types or areas you don't serve are no longer credited, so set those tightly.8,9

What's a good cost per lead for a plumber?

Plumbing LSA leads ran about $57 to $69 in early to mid 2026.7,5 Divide by your booking rate to get cost per booked job, then compare it with gross profit on an average ticket.

How do plumbers get more calls?

Show up in Google's top 3 across your whole service area, not just near the shop; answer every call, including after hours; and have a page for each money service and town. LSA adds volume on top.

Should I buy leads from Angi or Thumbtack?

They can fill a slow week, but those leads are often shared with several plumbers, so you're competing on speed and price. Calls from your own profile and site aren't shared.

About our numbers: in October 2026 we scanned 49 established, independent home service companies in the Charlotte, NC metro on their main money search, using a 7 × 7 grid about 10 miles wide (scan date October 15, 2026); rank and AI-answer data were collected with Local Falcon. "Near their own shop" means the 13 grid points within about 7 miles of the business address. The 49 were shortlisted from 152 companies because their maps looked weak, so they are not a random sample, and trade-level groups are small. AI results come from nine checks of each company's main search across its service area. Outside figures are linked below; vendor and platform data are labeled as such.
