Pest control marketing that adds recurring customers inside your routes

Pest control marketing should be judged by cost per recurring customer and where that customer lives, not cost per lead. Recurring service is 85.4% of residential pest control revenue in the US,1 and a new customer on an existing route is worth far more than one 25 miles away. In our study, national brands and franchises held about 10% of pest control top-3 spots, roughly three times their share in HVAC.2

Why pest control marketing has different math

Pest control is a subscription business that happens to start with a phone call. NPMA's 2026 industry analysis puts US structural pest control at $13.4 billion in 2025, with 85.4% of residential revenue recurring, and 81.4% of the 16,565 firms running one or two locations.1 Rollins, one of the largest operators, reports about 75% of its business as recurring and made 26 acquisitions in 2025.3

So the useful number isn't cost per lead. It's what you paid for a customer who signs a recurring plan, how long they stay, and whether they sit on a route you already drive. One pest marketing firm's 2026 benchmarks put optimized routes at 12 to 18 stops a day against 8 to 9 with manual routing, and warn when drive time passes 40% of paid hours.4 A cheap lead 25 miles off-route can lose money.

Allowable cost per recurring sign-up = annual plan value × expected years × gross margin ÷ your target return

Example with your own numbers: a $480-a-year plan kept three years at 50% gross margin is worth about $720 in gross profit. If you want a 3× return, you can afford up to about $240 to win that customer, and more if they're on a dense route.

When pest control customers search

SeasonWhat drives callsWhat to push
Late winter to springTermite swarms; ants as it warmsTermite inspections, recurring plans that include ants
SummerMosquitoes, ticks, stinging insectsMosquito programs, add-ons for existing customers
Fall to winterRodents moving indoorsRodent exclusion, plan renewals before the slow quarters

Rollins reports lower profit in the first and fourth quarters and higher in the second and third,3 which matches what most owners feel. Demand is growing too: PCT's Pest Index was up 12% year over year in December 2025, with mosquito up 26% and residential up 15%.5 Termites alone cause more than $5 billion in property damage a year, according to NPMA, which is why termite pages pull high-intent searches.6

How do pest control companies rank higher on Google Maps?

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.7 For pest control, distance cuts both ways: you want to rank where your routes already run, and you don't need to rank 40 minutes away.

Share of residents who see a typical company in Google's top 3, by distance from its shop, weighted by 2020 Census population. The Three-Mile Map, 138 Charlotte-area companies (26 pest control scans), October 2026.2 Differences between trades other than HVAC are within the margin of error.

Pest control companies did best at home in our study, in the top 3 for about 90% of residents near the shop, and still fell to about 3% at 6.7 miles.2 National brands and franchises held about 10% of pest top-3 spots, and the five most frequent winners about 11%.2 Google weighs prominence alongside relevance and distance,7 so local companies compete with the right categories, a page per pest and per town, and reviews that mention the neighborhood.

Which pest control marketing channels work best?

  • Google Business Profile. Free per call and closest to the customer. Aim it at your route clusters.
  • Local Services Ads. Pay per lead; good for urgent pests. Set the service area to your routes and answer the phone, because missed calls during business hours are billable.8
  • Website pages per pest and town. "Termite inspection in [town]" pages bring planned, higher-value work and are the kind of page AI answers can cite.
  • Door-to-door and mailers. Useful for filling a route you already run; they work better alongside a strong local map position.
  • Referrals and existing customers. Add-ons like mosquito or termite protection for current customers are the cheapest growth you have.

About half of US homeowners, 52%, used a licensed pest professional in the past year,9 so the market is there. The question is whether the calls in your area reach you or a bigger brand.

How do you track cost per recurring customer?

Most owners can't answer the question that matters: which marketing produced the jobs on the board this week. In a 2026 survey of about 1,000 home service operators, 67% said they can't tie marketing spend directly to revenue, and 78% use two or more marketing vendors.10

The fix is plumbing, not a prettier dashboard:

  • One tracking number per source. Google requires the numbers on your Business Profile to be under your direct control and lets you add up to two numbers beyond the primary one.11,12 Website visitors get a number that matches how they arrived.
  • Match every call to a job. Each tracked call is tied to the customer and job in your field software, so the report reads "Maps: 31 calls, 17 booked, $41,300 sold", not "2,400 impressions."
  • Score the calls. We listen for whether the call was a real opportunity, whether it was booked, and why not when it wasn't.

For pest control we tie the call to the plan, not just the first service, using your FieldRoutes, PestPac or other field software data. That's how you see that a source producing fewer leads is producing more recurring revenue.

Questions owners ask

How much should I pay per lead for pest control?

Work backward from the customer. Multiply the yearly plan value by expected years and gross margin, divide by the return you want, and that's what you can afford per recurring sign-up. Then divide by your close rate to get an allowable cost per lead.

How much should a pest control company spend on marketing?

Owners commonly budget a share of revenue; one agency, Hook, typically sees 5% to 15%.13 A better guide is cost per recurring customer against that customer's lifetime gross profit.

How do I get more pest control customers?

Rank in Google's top 3 inside your route clusters, publish a page for each pest and town you serve, answer every call, and sell add-ons to customers you already have.

Does SEO work for pest control?

Yes, especially for planned, higher-value work like termite inspections and recurring plans. Profile fixes can show up within weeks; new pages usually take one to three months.

What should I ask a pest control marketing agency?

Whether your Google and ad accounts stay in your name, what they will deliver in the first 90 days, and whether reports show recurring customers by source, pulled from your field software.

About our numbers: The Three-Mile Map, our October 2026 study, scanned 138 Charlotte-area HVAC, plumbing, pest control and garage door companies on 7 × 7 grids with a 10-mile radius (7,056 Google Maps searches on October 15, 2026), weighted each grid point by the residents living there using 2020 Census data, and checked 53 of the companies on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Rank and AI-answer data were collected with Local Falcon. The companies lean toward independent shops and 57% of the scans are HVAC, so trade-level figures outside HVAC have wide margins.
